Today at our State Assembly, our candidate for County Commissioner, Michael Leptic, and our candidate for Cumberland City Council, Wayne Hedrick, officially received our party's backing.
Our endorsement process for Cumberland City Council was open to everyone, as the election is non-partisan. Mr. Hedrick has made his Green Party affiliation public.
The results were unanimous for both Mr. Leptic and Mr. Hedrick, with no voting irregularities, blank ballots, or invalid ballots. This primary was not tax-payer funded.
The vote was open to observation by the general public, the press, and electoral / voting agencies. Immediately following the tallying and the announcement of the vote, nomination papers for Mr. Leptic were certified by our County Chairperson, Dan DelMonte, with an observing witness. The documents were then directly handed on site to Acting State Co-Chair Andy Ellis. Under Maryland Election law, County Central Committees for minor political parties have no authority to nominate candidates. That authority is granted solely to the State Central Committee.
At this time the local Green Primary for 2018 has passed for Allegany County. However, our party has until July 2 at 5 pm to file candidates. Our Central Committee will still be accepting inquiries for people interested in running for public office. There are several positions that are uncontested at this time. If the County Central Committee votes to nominate future candidates, the State Central Committee will be informed and will honor our intentions by formally nominating said candidates.
